Country Cottage BnB - Quality accommodation in Dorset

Things to do

We are ½ mile from the river Stour which is well known for its course fishing and record specimens (see photo). Day tickets and weekly tickets are £5.00 and £10.00 respectively and can be obtained locally. The web site for the club is www.s-haa.co.uk. For more information please see our fishing section.

We have many fine pubs and restaurants locally and the newly refurbished Fiddleford Inn is only 200 yards away. This pub is renowned for its cuisine, ambience and famous Boogie Woogie nights which take place every Friday at 8.45pm.

If you are a rambler, or you enjoy a quiet stroll in the country, we have some beautiful countryside to explore, including 200 acres of woodland within a ¼ mile of our cottage, known as Piddleswood. Nearby Hambledon Hill (below) is a very beutiful spot and has the oldest Yew wood in England. You can walk in the wood that provided the bows for the Battle of Hastings!

Sturminster Newton is a medieval town with its own museum and a working water mill that predates the Domesday Book of 1086. The mill is open to the public and is well worth looking around. Organic flour can be purchased from the mill. “Stur” as it is known locally, had a church dating as far back as 968. However, the church of St Mary’s was rebuilt in 1486 and renovated in1825, which is the church that you see today. The famous 6 arch bridge (below) is one of the best example is the region. Be carefull not to tamper with it - if you are caught you could be transported to Australia for life!

For golfers we are surrounded by good golf courses which suit all golfing abilities. Some of the local courses are Sherborne Golf Club, Ashley wood Golf Course, Rushmoor Golf Course and Folk Golf Course.

All this is within a mile of us at Country Cottage. Thank you to the wonderful “Stur” book for some of the information on this website. The book can be purchased locally at £12.95 and is a marvellous, informative read. If you wish to travel a little further we have the south coast, the New Forest and Salisbury all within an hour’s drive.

Packed lunches can be provided with prior notice.
